Residency in the Gaspé Peninsula

MAUDE ARSENAULT IN THE GASPÉ PENINSULA

During a four-week residency to be undertaken in 2022-2023, the Montreal-based artist Maude Arsenault will use photography to document the changing shores, beaches, cliffs and seascapes of the Gaspé coastline by investing them with women’s bodies by way of performance art, self-portraits and sculptures in situ. In doing so, the artist will be attempting to take an introspective look at the micro- and macro-landscape in its relationship with bodies-spaces-regions, in the context of a climate and social crisis that is wreaking havoc on our ecological, physical, economic and identity-related balances. Her research and explorations will be unveiled to the public at the 2023 edition of Rencontres.

Exchange residencies in France and in Québec

NATACHA CLITANDRE IN FRANCE, AND MATHILDE LAVENNE IN THE GASPÉ AND THE EASTERN TOWNSHIPS

As part of a digital project on the subject of recording memory through photography and literature established by Rencontres and Diaphane (France), the Montreal-based artist Natacha Clitandre did a digital residency in France in 2022. For the occasion she was assisted by Le Fablab in Clermont-sur-l’Oise, a partner of Diaphane’s. The results of her research will be presented at the Photaumnales, in Beauvais, in 2023. The French artist Mathilde Lavenne, meanwhile, will have a creation residency of her own in the Gaspé and the Eastern Townships in the fall of 2022, with the help of the contemporary-art center Sporobole in Sherbrooke. The evolution of her project will be documented on the Web platforms of Rencontres and Diaphane in 2022, and then her digital work will be exhibited in 2023 at Rencontres and at the Photaumnales.

JOANNIE LAFRENIÈRE IN FRANCE

The Montreal-based artist Joannie Lafrenière was invited to take part in a mission residency that took place in February 2022 in the Retz-en-Valois area relating to a restoration project for the château de Villers-Cotterêts at the Cité internationale de la langue française. She led photography workshops dealing with the diversity of the French language in schools and with different associations. Having now familiarized herself with the château and its surroundings, she will return to France in September 2022 to carry out her creative work.

ROBERT CHARLOTTE AND PATRICE JUIF IN QUÉBEC, AND JUDITH BELLAVANCE AND PHILIPPE GARON IN FRANCE

As part of a France-Québec exchange project in literature, poetry and visual arts that will be taking place in the fall of 2022, France’s Robert Charlotte, visual artist, and Patrice Juif, author, will come to Québec for a creation residency, while Gaspesian author Philippe Garon and Montreal-based visual artist Judith Bellavance will do the same in France. The results of these residencies will be on display in 2023 as part of the Photaumnales, in Beauvais, France, and at Rencontres de la photographie en Gaspésie.
